Jacinda Thomsen discovered she was dyslexic the day her youngest daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and anxiety. She went to her local public school and advocated for the needs of her child. Unfortunately, there was no one on staff trained to help a struggling dyslexic reader. She immediately signed up for a specialized training called Orton Gillingham that has been shown to help dyslexic students learn how to read. Later, she sought multisensory math training to support a student she was tutoring. Finally, she read and studied how to explicitly teach writing.

Watching her students struggle to enjoy school has inspired her to start a new kind of school. The Honeysuckle School will serve girls from preschool to eighth grade with language-based learning disorders. The students will be taught structured reading, spelling, writing, and multisensory math with the Orton Gillingham Approach.
